Mpaha Community Senior High School in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region is fully prepared to transition from a day school to a boarding institution, pending the final approval from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The school, which was established in 2019 as part of the government’s E-block project, has already made significant infrastructural strides to accommodate boarding students. According to local sources (confirmed in the images attached), two large dormitories for male and female students have been constructed on the campus to house male and female students. These facilities are reportedly complete and ready for use, positioning the school to address the growing demand for boarding spaces in the region.
Mpaha Community SHS currently operates as a mixed day school, but its leadership has been advocating for a change in status to better serve students from distant communities within the Savannah Region and beyond.
The push for boarding status aligns with broader national efforts by the government and GES to expand boarding facilities in response to challenges associated with senior high school placements. In recent years, the Ministry of Education has awarded contracts to upgrade several E-block schools into boarding facilities to ease accommodation challenges.
Local authorities and community members have expressed optimism about the pending approval, noting that the addition of boarding status would significantly enhance access to secondary education for students in the Central Gonja District and surrounding areas. The school’s location in Mpaha, a rural community, makes it a vital educational hub for the Savannah Region.
While the school has faced some challenges, including recent damage to classroom blocks from rainstorms, the completion of dormitory facilities marks a major milestone in its development. The school community is now eagerly awaiting the official nod from the MOE and GES to commence boarding operations.
As of now, no official timeline has been given for the approval. However, stakeholders remain hopeful that the decision will be expedited to allow the school to admit boarding students in the upcoming academic year.
