Teacher Education: Tamale College of Education Celebrates 10th Congregation Ceremony

The Tamale College of Education (TACE) on Saturday, August 31, 2024, held its 10th Congregation Ceremony, celebrating the achievements of four hundred and fifty-seven (457) graduating class.

The ceremony, held under the theme, “Preparing Future Educators for a Changing Educational Landscape”, took place at the college’s auditorium and drew a large crowd of dignitaries, educators, students, and community members.

It was honored by prominent guests, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sagnerigu, Ahmed Yakubu Polo, who represented the Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Saani Alhassan Shaibu as Special Guest of Honor. Other key figures present included Prof. Hudu Zakaria, Chair of the Governing Council of TACE; Mr. Robin Todd, Executive Director of T-TEL; and Dr. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC),

Also, representatives from various educational institutions, civil society organizations, and alumni of the college, honored the colourful event.

Adapting to a Changing Educational Environment

In his keynote address, the college’s principal, Dr. Sulemana Iddrisu, stressed the importance of preparing future educators to thrive in an evolving educational landscape. He highlighted the impact of globalization, technological advancements, and shifting educational philosophies on teaching and learning. “Our role as an institution is to ensure that our graduates are not only knowledgeable but also adaptable and innovative.  They must be able to integrate technology, foster critical thinking, and create inclusive learning environments that cater to the needs of all students” the principal remarked.

Remarkable Academic Achievements

The Principal who could not hide his excitement but to celebrate the exceptional academic performance of the graduating students, said the ceremony was exceptional, revealing that out of the 457 students who graduated, two hundred and eleven (211) achieved First-Class honors—a 2914% increase compared to the previous year. “This achievement positions TACE as a leader among the five Colleges of Education affiliated with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The gender distribution of the graduating class was 61% male and 39% female, with nearly half of the Junior High School (JHS) Education program students achieving First-Class honors” he stated. 

The Principal commended the dedication of members of various faculties, the commitment of the students, and the support of parents and guardians for these outstanding results. He emphasized that the student’s academic success was a reflection of the quality of education provided at TACE and the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved.

Preparing for the Future: Enhancements and Innovations

Addressing the future, Dr. Sulemana, highlighted the significant investments in academic programs, infrastructure, and faculty development. “TACE has allocated GH₵216,000 towards professional development for staff, ensuring they are equipped with the latest pedagogical skills and knowledge. The college is also nearing the completion of renovations to its Catering Department, which will offer students modern facilities for hands-on learning” he noted. 

He added “the integration of technology into teaching and learning has been a priority for TACE, with the introduction of e-learning platforms and virtual classrooms. These tools not only enhance the learning experience but also prepare students for a digitally-driven world. Furthermore, TACE has embedded principles of inclusive education into its curriculum, equipping future educators with the skills to support diverse learning needs, including those of students with special needs”.

Additionally, he addressed concerns of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), promising to work towards promoting faculty members and improving their welfare.
