As part of efforts to enhance digital education and improve performance among tutors and students, Tamale College of Education (TACE) has organized a three-day training workshop on Interactive Media for its tutors. The workshop, held from Tuesday, August 27 to Thursday, August 29, 2024, was conducted in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL).
The training aimed to equip tutors with the necessary digital skills and contemporary teacher education knowledge to effectively utilize interactive media in their teaching.
Secondly, it was meant to sharpen the skills of teachers in handling Open Distance Education Learning models.
Interactive Media refers to any computer-delivered electronic system that allows users to control, combine, and manipulate different types of media, such as text, sound, video, computer graphics, and animation.
The benefits of using interactive multimedia in the classroom are numerous, including improved creativity, focus, motivation, independence, and participation among students. Additionally, the use of interactive multimedia increases student motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes.
The workshop was facilitated by experts who provided hands-on training and guidance on the effective use of interactive media in teacher education.
Participants were engaged in various activities, including presentations, group discussions, and practical exercises, to enhance their understanding and application of interactive media.
At the closing ceremony held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, the Principal of TACE, Dr. Sulemana Iddrisu, commended the tutors for their active participation and enthusiasm throughout the workshop.
He noted that the successful completion of the workshop marks a significant milestone in the college’s efforts to integrate technology into teacher education.
He also indicated that the college looks forward to continuing its partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning to further develop the digital capacity of its tutors and student-teachers.
Dr. Sulemana, emphasized the importance of embracing technology in teaching and learning and expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth of Learning for their partnership and support in organizing the workshop.
He assured the tutors that the college would continue to provide opportunities for professional development and growth, ensuring that they remain at the forefront of innovative teaching practices.
The Consultant and lead facilitator of the training, Professor. Harry Barton Essel, in an interview with coeresourceshub.org, said the training was part of a broader Open and Distance Learning (ODL) concept and aimed to equip educators the required technological innovations to the able to engage their learners in person and virtually.
He further, expressed hopes that the participants would effectively integrate interactive media into their teaching practices and help enhance student learning outcomes.
Some participants who shared their experiences and insights with coeresourceshub.org, found the workshop to be beneficial.
“The hands-on training and practical exercises really helped me understand how to effectively use interactive media in my teaching. I’m excited to try out new ideas in my classroom!” said Mrs. Ahmed Salaam Najat, a Tutor at the Mathematics Department
Another participant(Madam Issahaku Jomo Sadia of the Languages Department), echoed similar sentiments. “The workshop was an eye-opener for me. I never realized the potential of interactive media in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. I’m looking forward to sharing my newfound knowledge with my colleagues.”
“The workshop didn’t just focus on theory; we got to actually create and implement our own interactive media lessons. This will definitely make a difference in how I approach teaching and learning” emphasized by another participants (Dr. Zakaria Alhassan of the Education Department).
